Founded in 1966 in Anaheim, California, by the Van Doren brothers, Paul and Jim, along with partners Gordon Lee and Serge Delia, Vans began as the Van Doren Rubber Company. It quickly set itself apart by offering same-day custom shoe-making—a unique direct-to-consumer strategy that catered to individual style preferences at competitive prices. By the early 1970s, Vans had captured the attention of local skateboarders thanks to the durable and grippy nature of the Style #44 deck shoe, now known as the Vans Authentic, which became a staple in Southern California skate culture.

As the brand evolved, Vans introduced several designs that became synonymous with skateboarding and streetwear. The Vans Era, designed by skate legends Tony Alva and Stacy Peralta in 1976, brought comfort with its padded collar and style with various color combinations, alongside the debut of Vans’ iconic “OFF THE WALL” logo. The 1977 launches of the Vans Old Skool and Vans Slip-On further cemented the brand’s status in both skate and fashion worlds, introducing the “jazz stripe” and gaining mass appeal with the Checkerboard Slip-On after its appearance in “Fast Times at Ridgemont High.” Over the decades, Vans has not only remained a staple in action sports but has also achieved significant status in the streetwear scene through high-profile collaborations and collections that emphasize the intersection of sport and style.
