The Air Jordan 9 is the most unusual shoe in the Jordan line: it's the only signature Michael Jordan never wore during an NBA game. Released in 1994, the AJ9 came out during Jordan's first retirement from basketball, when he was pursuing a minor-league baseball career with the Birmingham Barons.
Tinker Hatfield designed the AJ9 in anticipation of Jordan's continued NBA presence, but MJ had already left. The shoe became associated instead with Jordan's baseball career (he wore baseball cleat versions), global appeal, and the international colorway tributes that became a marketing strategy in Jordan's absence.
The AJ9 is notable for its globally-inspired tongue branding — the insides of the tongues feature words in multiple languages and cultural symbols representing global reach. This was part of Nike's positioning strategy while their signature player was away from the NBA.
