The Air Jordan 6 released in 1991 and is Michael Jordan's first championship shoe — he wore the AJ6 while winning his first NBA Finals MVP and the Chicago Bulls' first of six championships. It also marks a distinct shift in Jordan aesthetics toward cleaner lines and sports car-inspired design.
Tinker Hatfield drew inspiration from a Porsche 911 that he owned at the time. The AJ6's two lace locks (a first for Jordan, designed to help MJ tie his shoes faster during games) and heel tab both echoed automotive design language. The model's clean molded heel and visible Air unit were refined from the AJ5's more aggressive treatment.
The 1991 NBA Finals:
Jordan wore the "Infrared" colorway (black upper with vibrant pink/red accents) during the 1991 NBA Finals against the Lakers. The Bulls won 4-1. Jordan averaged 31.2 PPG in the series and was named Finals MVP. The Infrared colorway is forever associated with Jordan's first title.
