Jordan Brand is cooking up a fun new release for the Air Jordan 9 coming later this year. The “What the Kilroy” Low-top pays homage to the brief retirement stint by Mike in the ’90s, and the six different aliases he used during that period.
During the mid-’90s, Michael Jordan briefly retired from basketball. He used a number of aliases in the short stint to appear in Nike ads, which formed the basis of 2012’s “Kilroy” pack of the Air Jordan 9. The collection consisted of six total colorways, one for each alias used by MJ, often with goofy, made-up names. The list includes Calvin Bailey, Motorboat Jones, Slim Jenkins, Fontay Montana, Bentley Ellis, and the most famous, Johnny Kilroy. The Kilroy alias is the most widely known for being features in a Jumpman advertisement showing Jordan wearing a #4 Bulls jersey with the name Kilroy, with the promise that the mystery athletes would be revealed in the future. This year, Jordan is paying homage to that period of Mike’s career with the “What the Kilroy” Air Jordan 9 Low. The project brings all six colorways together into one pair of shoes, creating an eclectic, mismatched look.
