On was founded in January 2010 in Zurich, Switzerland, by former professional duathlete and Ironman athlete Olivier Bernhard, together with David Allemann and Caspar Coppetti. Bernhard built his first prototypes by gluing cut pieces of garden hose to the bottom of a running shoe. That idea became CloudTec, the system of hollow pods that compress on landing and then lock together for push-off. On is still headquartered in Zurich and has traded on the New York Stock Exchange as On Holding AG (ticker ONON) since September 2021.

CloudTec, Speedboard and LightSpray

Every On running shoe is built around CloudTec. Most models pair the pods with a Speedboard, a plate inside the midsole that helps with toe-off. The 2023 Cloudsurfer introduced CloudTec Phase, which uses Helion superfoam pods designed to collapse in sequence, so that shoe no longer needed a Speedboard. LightSpray, unveiled in 2024 with the Cloudboom Strike LS racer, uses a robot to spray a seamless, laceless upper directly onto the shoe. In 2026 On brought LightSpray to the Cloudmonster line.

Federer, Zendaya and Mbappé

Roger Federer became an On shareholder in November 2019, and THE ROGER Centre Court was the first shoe to come out of that partnership. Zendaya signed a multi-year partnership in June 2024. FKA twigs moved from campaign face to designer, most recently with the Cloudmonster 3 Mule. In September 2026 Kylian Mbappé left Nike to lead On's new football category, with his first LightSpray boots due in 2027.

Collaborations

Loewe has been On's longest-running fashion partner since its first capsule in March 2022, which reworked the Cloudventure trail shoe and the Cloudrock hiking boot. POST ARCHIVE FACTION ran from the Cloudmonster 2 in 2024 to the Cloudsoma, the final release of that partnership, in September 2026. Kith signed a multi-year deal in 2026 that produced the K Tech 1 and K Tech 2 runners, followed by the lifestyle-focused K Tech 3.
