Made in USA has always been about New Balance’s devotion to making top-tier footwear, focusing on small batch production to emphasize craftsmanship and materials. The signature product line got its start in 1982, with the release of the iconic 990 runner. At the time, the premium model was the first running shoe to breach the $100 barrier, heralding it as the best performance shoe available. The Made line has continued ever since, and has crossed oceans to bring the same quality to Made in UK sneakers, which have their own manufacturing facility in Flimby, England. In 2012, New Balance released the 2040 through the MiUSA branch, describing the running model as their most advanced and premium sneaker ever made. Now, the 2040 is taking another big step forward with a new v5 edition.
New Balance has a long history of their mainline footwear evolving into different, better versions of itself. The classic 990 is currently on v6, and this month the 2040 will introduce the new v5 style. The minds behind the new sneaker have called it New Balance’s most advanced lifestyle sneaker ever made, packing every available cushioning technology under the foot, while crafting the upper out of the most premium materials available. The construction starts with a two-tone mesh base, which is layered with high quality Horween nubuck leather in classic grey tones. The layers are stitched together by contrast threads in two gauges, producing an interesting small and big stitch effect. Underneath, the midsole tooling combines Abzorb, ENCAP, and FuelCell cushioning, the first time all three have been used in one silhouette. Additionally, two carbon fiber plates are embedded in the sole, one full-length and the other tucked into the 2040v5’s medial side.
NEW BALANCE MADE IN USA 2040V5 RELEASE INFORMATION
The upcoming Made in USA release from New Balance has been scheduled to land next week, on August 20th, 2026. Building on the legacy of the original 2040 from 2012, the new v5 version combines every ounce of cushioning tech available with a premium Horween leather upper and tons of craft-oriented details. This release will be limited to North America for now, with a wider drop in May 2027. Pricing has been set at $400 for this ultra-capable lifestyle model.
