Chinese artist Zhang Quan first teamed up with adidas last year, utilizing his eclectic Melting Sadness brand to create animal-inspired sneakers. Now, the two have cooked up some eye-catching looks for the Forum Low, coming soon.

Melting Sadness and adidas debuted their first collaborative efforts last year, when the Chinese artist transformed the classic Three Stripes Superstar into various other things, like a duck, a bunny, and a hot dog. Taking on colorful designs and add-ons to achieve the desired look, this approach to footwear design has carried over into the latest work from Melting Sadness and adidas. This week, the two partners’ take on the Forum Low surfaced online this week, showing off a seemingly DIY-inspired take on the retro basketball model. Constructed from various corduroy, leather, and suede panels, the two pairs use unfinished edges, rivets, and jagged stitching to give the shoes a ‘handmade’ appearance.

The latest project from adidas Originals and Zhang Quan’s Melting Sadness, the DIY-inspired Forum Low, has not yet been announced for release, though they are expected to launch sometime before the year is out. Available in two colorways, the corduroy, leather, and suede makeup will be available from both adidas and select retailers, with a price tag likely in the $140+ range.
