adidas’ ZX line has reappeared in 2020, popping up in retro and new styles. The latest release sees Scotland’s Hanon reworking the vintage ZX 420 with a bold new “Luck of the Sea” theme, inspired by the Scottish North Sea.

The last time we saw a collaboration between adidas and Scottish retailer Hanon was in 2017 when the two crafted the “Dark Storm” adidas New York for an entry in the Consortium division’s globe-trotting adventures. Now, the two are back with their latest special-edition project ready for release, following up on its predecessor with another vintage Three Stripes silhouette, the ZX 420. Inspired by Scotland’s North Sea, this smooth blue and grey color scheme takes its cues from the local myths, superstitions, and lore that surround the area, applying plenty of seaward-derived details to complete the design. The color scheme begins with a grey mesh toebox in the forefoot, reinforced by grey suede overlays for the mudguard and lower lacing system. Next, the quarter panels feature a darker shade of grey mesh, with bright blue stripes layered on top to stand out. The ZX 420’s tongue comes in a matching shade of bright blue, hidden behind grey laces and dual Hanon/adidas branding. The rear of the shoe is constructed from two different panels of grey, one light and one dark, running up against the model’s soft blue inner lining. Finally, the “Luck of the Sea” ZX 420 is completed by a two-tone blue midsole, and “Right Foot First” hangtags, recalling the superstition of stepping onto a boat with your right foot first.
