After months of waiting, Donald Glover and adidas officially launch Donald Glover Presents, the rollout of their collaborative efforts. They team up for three different pairs that allow the sneakers on your feet to really tell their own story.

Whether you know him as Donald Glover or Childish Gambino, the man has gathered up quite the resume. The Grammy-winning artist has scattered himself throughout many different paths. A well-known rapper, vocalist, actor, writer, Glover has done it all. Now he can cross out having his own adidas Originals shoe off of his To-Do list, well three to be exact.

We first got word that the partnership was coming back in September of 2018 in the artists’ “Feels like Summer” music video. The cartoon animation of Childish Gambino swapping out a pair of ordinary sneakers for a low top adidas piqued the curiosity of many. With the artists’ unique style it would definitely be interesting to see what the collaboration would hold, and now that we have official images that were released with short-films that starred Glover and Actress-Comedian Mo’Nique, they couldn’t have done a better job symbolizing Glovers’ personality and aesthetic that he brings to the table. The meaning behind the films was impactful as they shed light on the beauty that worn shoes are accompanied with and that they are never “dirty”; they are just a reflection of ones’ personal experiences.

The talent that Donald Glover holds is very much unseen before. His artistic and subtle style boasts through everything he does, and the two were able to let this collaboration do the same. The pack contains three classic models that the artist reimagined the Nizza, the Continental 80, and the Lacombe. Each of the three is tone-on-tone white that is as simplistic as possible yet demands the eyes’ attention. With a focus of the storytelling that worn-in sneakers contain and the wealth of the experiences they bear, the capsule is inspired by subtle imperfections.

Glover says, “With this project, I wanted to encourage people to think about how their stories can be told on their feet. Value isn’t quantified by what you wear, rather the experience from them.” The project seeks to tell a story through the shoes that you wear, they feature a series of deconstructed details, like uneven stitching, inside-out golden eyestays, and a custom 3-Stripe mark that evokes hand painting. Amplifying character, the canvas is not stitched down allowing them to fray over time the more you wear. They are all housed in an inside-out adidas Originals shoe box that opens by a tear strip and contains three different sets of shoelaces that are designed to fringe with wear.

Glover himself said, “The partnership for me is about being able to exemplify what doing your own thing truly looks and feels like.” The artist definitely was able to put that into fruition and his artistic capabilities changed the way that adidas even saw the collaboration themselves. Chris Law, Senior Design Director-adidas Originals explained, “As a visionary, we admire Glover’s capabilities to surpass ‘genres’ and uniquely tell a story. From a design perspective, we drove the aesthetic of this collection based on adidas’ rich history in classic sneakers and Glover’s philosophy of understated points of interest and appreciation for how shoes evolve with wear, expressing more personality over time. Between Glover’s artistic vision and our expertise, we will continue to evolve and look forward to where that takes us.”

The sneakers silhouettes do not hold the aesthetic that the trendiest shoes contain as of late. They are not chunky, bright, or futuristic, they are actually quite the opposite, but it works perfectly. adidas has been on a mission to create their own path for quite some time. Being an athletic brand, they have put together a plethora of iconic names as their partners that are not athletes. Stars such as Kanye West, Pharrell, Pusha T, now Beyonce and Donald Glover, the brand has shifted to not just a brand for athletes rather a brand for people who simply love to create their own path and style. Just like Chris Law stated above, they look forward to evolving and growing with their partners rather than restraining them to conventional norms. This collection looks to be a perfect example of that philosophy.
