Kobe Bryant signed with Nike in 2003 after leaving adidas (where he'd had three signature shoes from 1997-2002). His Nike signature line launched in 2006 with the Nike Zoom Kobe 1 and continued through 2016 with the Kobe 11. Kobe's tragic passing on January 26, 2020 ended new signature development, but Nike's ongoing Protro (Performance Retro) program has kept the silhouettes alive in both on-court and lifestyle contexts.
The low-top revolution
Kobe's most significant contribution to basketball footwear was the 2008 release of the Nike Hyperdunk — followed by the Nike Zoom Kobe IV in 2009 — which introduced low-top basketball shoes to elite on-court performance. Prior to Kobe, NBA players universally wore high-tops. After Kobe demonstrated the Low's performance advantages (lighter weight, greater ankle mobility), the entire NBA shifted to low-tops within 5-7 years.

The Protro era
Starting in 2018 with the Kobe 1 Protro, Nike began releasing Performance Retros (Protros) of Kobe's most iconic silhouettes with modern cushioning and performance upgrades. Every year since Kobe's passing in 2020, major retros and new colorways have released including "Mambacita," "Year of the Snake," "Del Sol," "Halo," and ongoing lifestyle/Protro variants. In 2024, Nike launched the Kobe × Air Force 1 crossover and Kobe × Dunk Low, expanding his presence across Nike's silhouette catalog.
Iconic colorways
"81 Points," "Black Mamba," "Del Sol," "Lakers," "Mambacita," "Year of the Horse," "Grinch," and "Lakers Hall of Fame" are among the most sought-after Kobe retros.
