Today’s run tracking services operate very differently than their earliest predecessors, like the Micropacer, which packed a miniature computer into the tongue of a shoe. However, you can still check them out as adidas has a new “Black Solar” colorway dropping soon.

The adidas Micropacer first launched in 1984, when technology in both footwear and computers was beginning to advance at a rapid pace. The obvious solution at the Three Stripes was to combine the two, placing a pedometer inside the tongue of the shoe to help track your steps and overall pace. While the shoe was somewhat gimmicky at the time, the ability to record your runs was the beginning of something else entirely. Regardless, the Micropacer is still pointed to as one of the most advanced shoes ever created, and still inspired nostalgia among hardcore adidas fans to this day. Luckily for them, the Three Stripes is happy to oblige with new colorways, like the “Black Solar” look launching overseas this week. Decking out the OG Micropacer in black, hints of solar yellow appear on the midsole and on the computer insert for a flash of color.
