It’s finally here. After five years of the adidas Ultra Boost changing very little, adidas has introduced a radical new silhouette heading into next year. Check out the Ultra Boost 19, dropping in Multicolor next month.

adidas has gone in an entirely new direction with the Ultra Boost 2019. Built specifically for running, the new silhouette uses the same combination of Boost and Primeknit as the original, with a wildly new design. First debuted in the “Laser Red” makeup, the brand is ready to introduce a slew of new colorways in the new year, starting with this “Multicolor” iteration. However, while the new colors are certainly interesting, many are still wondering just what exactly adidas changed about the Ultra Boost 2019.

First, the signature Boost midsole has been modified. Instead of retaining its shape, the new sole is instead manufactured in the brand’s Speedfactories and built to provide 20% more Boost while staying as light as ever. Next, the Primeknit upper has been innovated into what adidas refers to as “Primeknit 360”. While the comfort remains to be seen, the new construction reportedly feels like a second skin, while maintaining the flexibility of the original.

Next, adidas has also made modifications to the two different TPU inserts that are instrumental in the Ultra Boost’s design. First, the underfoot Torsion bar has been replaced with a new Torsion Spring, which extends each arm of the piece allowing for greater flexibility and energy return in the Boost. Next, the famous Ultra Boost heel counter has been reduced to a simple outline, now referred to as the Heel Frame.
