It’s finally here. After five years of the adidas Ultra Boost changing very little, adidas is introducing a radical new silhouette heading into next year. Check out the Ultra Boost 19, dropping this week.

The adidas Ultra Boost is long overdue for a change. Originally launched in 2015, the silhouette broke barriers for adidas in the United States, helping them become the footwear powerhouse we love today and driving the burst in popularity of the then relatively new Boost midsoles. Now, the Ultra Boost is largely considered one of the best sneakers in the past five years, as well as one of the most important Three Stripes silhouettes to ever hit retail.

However, in recent months, consumers have been begging adidas for a change to the silhouette. So far, only the Primeknit upper’s pattern has changed, and we are ready for something new. Today, adidas was finally ready to announce it, doing so in grand fashion. Titled the Ultra Boost 19, the new silhouette is a radical departure from previous iterations, which adidas has neatly categorized into four specific changes.

First, the signature Boost midsole has been modified. Instead of retaining its shape, the new sole is instead manufactured in the brand’s Speedfactories and built to provide 20% more Boost while staying as light as ever. Next, the Primeknit upper has been innovated into what adidas refers to as “Primeknit 360”. While the comfort remains to be seen, the new construction reportedly feels like a second skin, while maintaining the flexibility of the original.

Next, adidas has also made modifications to the two different TPU inserts that are instrumental in the Ultra Boost’s design. First, the underfoot Torsion bar has been replaced with a new Torsion Spring, which extends each arm of the piece allowing for greater flexibility and energy return in the Boost. Next, the famous Ultra Boost heel counter has been reduced to a simple outline, now referred to as the Heel Frame.

So far, many sneakerheads are not happy with adidas’ changes to the Ultra Boost line, though this is largely unwarranted. From the first rumors of the new silhouette, various news outlets and leak accounts have made it excruciatingly clear that the Ultra Boost 19 is designed purely for running. The lifestyle crossover that occurred with the original Ultra Boost was entirely unexpected, though a welcome surprise for the brand. However, with this Ultra Boost 19, they are firmly planning it for runners only, leaving clueless sneaker fans in the dust.
