As we slowly approach a new year, adidas is planning out their releases for the first quarter. While we likely won’t know most of this info until a later date, we do have an early look at a new “CNY” Ultra Boost expected for 2019.

adidas’s Chinese New Year footwear collections have always been a fan-favorite of collectors. Consisting of hot silhouettes in luxurious materials and colors, the project has used dozens of different Three Stripes silhouettes as canvasses before. This year, it appears they are going back to rehash a previously used silhouette: the Ultra Boost. However, this time around, the adidas running team appears to be receiving some help from an outside source and adidas partner, Eddie Huang.

The new Chinese New Year adidas Ultra Boost is easily one of their boldest sneakers for the project yet. Beginning with the Ultra Boost’s 1.0 Primeknit upper in red, they elevate the status of the shoe by adding a leather mudguard to the toe box and flipping the standard heel cup from plastic to leather. The supportive midfoot cage also takes on a new material choice, though it is currently unclear what that choice is. Gold detailing takes over the aglets and tongue branding, which features a panda face as an homage to Mr. Huang. Additionally, a gold Chinese character is printed on the heel.

In a recent press release from Eddie Huang himself, the world-renowned chef finally announced the new CNY Ultra Boost as his collaborative project. The all-red colorway is meant to commemorate a barbecue Huang is hosting to celebrate the holiday.

The next adidas Ultra Boost to receive the premium Chinese New Years treatment has not yet been announced for release, though they can be expected to drop around the holiday, which falls on February 5th. Given the details and luxe materials used, expect this pair to go for more than its usual $180 price tag, and launch from a variety of retailers.
