The Three Stripes’ first-ever basketball shoe returns this year. Back in the 1960s, adidas was ready to hop into the world of basketball, but first, they needed something iconic. Enter the Pro Model, returning in all of its original glory this month.

The adidas Pro Model first saw the light of day in 1965, as the Three Stripes first official basketball shoe, made specifically for the court. The very first iteration, however, is not the same one we know and love today, but it did play a huge part in the development of the leather high-top that defined basketball sneakers.

When the Pro Model first released, it was constructed from canvas to compete with other highly popular basketball sneakers at the time. However, players who wore the shoes complained about an increased number of injuries and a lack of stability from, causing the Three Stripes to return to the drawing board and try something new. The result is the world’s first all-leather basketball shoe, which provided the structure athletes needed from a high-top, and increased the lifespan of court-ready shoes at the time. Constructed with simplicity in mind, the shoe features minimal paneling, opting for a plain white look with simple black stripes, a hard rubber toe cap borrowed from the Superstar, and gold foil branding on the lateral sides, tongue, and heel. For the new 2020 release, adidas has matched these details perfectly, capturing the shape and construction perfectly.
