The trend of chunky sneakers in recent years has brought about some excellent new models, however, the retro releases are still our favorites. This month, adidas is tapping into their archives again to release the FYW Intimidation.

adidas Feet You Wear line was originally developed in the 1990s, with the goal of providing a sneaker midsole that conformed and enhanced the natural curves and shapes of the human foot. The result was a bulbous, cup-like sole that extended up around the sides of the foot for better grip and performance, particularly on the basketball court. FYW took off after that, appearing on dozens of adidas silhouettes throughout its time, many of which are still considered to be some of the Three Stripes best. Now, the brand is slowly reviving some of these classics, like the FYW Intimidation from this week, which had a hand in inspiring the more recent adidas Yeezy 500. The Intimidation was originally released int he mid-’90s as a basketball shoe, featuring a heavily layered upper with a stiff outer cage to provide plenty of support. The midsole of the Intimidation is where it shined, however. Fluid and sleek, but still sturdy with plenty of support, the FYW tooling for this model would eventually be pulled directly for Kanye West’s Yeezy 500 silhouette, with very few tweaks needed to bring the retro look into the modern-day.
