adidas is known for their ability to pull inspiration from their past to inspire the present. However, their next retro revival is easily the most ambitious yet, combining the ahead-of-its-time Micropacer with the ever-popular NMD. Meet the Futurepacer, coming soon.
adidas is no stranger to flipping an old-school classic into something futuristic and new. In fact, it has been a large part of their brand revitalization over the past several years. The most memorable from this series include the ADV and A//D lines, which revived adidas essentials like the EQT and Crazy families, bringing them into the modern day with new materials and technologies. Now, the Three Stripes is undertaking their most ambitious retro-redesign ever. Releasing this Summer, the adidas Futurepacer combines style elements of the NMD line with 1984’s infamous Micropacer.
The adidas Micropacer is still one of the most progressive sneakers of all time. Released in 1984, the running shoe featured a built-in pedometer in the oversized tongue to track the runner’s steps and distance. In the 1980’s, this was absolutely unheard of. At a time when computers were still large and bulky, the fact that adidas managed to squeeze one into a running shoe was extraordinary.
Now, it appears that 2018 will yield the updated Micropacer that no adidas fan was actually expecting. The adidas Originals Futurepacer is an aggressive new look. Combining elements of the 80’s runner with the modern NMD, adidas has created one of their most striking shoes in the past several years. The new design features much of the same leather upper used in the original, save for the absence of Three Stripe branding on the side paneling. The heel has been redesigned for the Futurepacer, replacing the standard leather heel tab with a new overlay that floats over the Achilles of the shoe. Finally, the adidas Futurepacer is complete with a new hybrid sole that pulls inspiration from both models, the Micropacer and the NMD. The midsection appears to be made from the light, comfy Boost foam, while the toe and heel sections feature a heavy use of EVA rubber to provide more stability and sturdiness.
ADIDAS ORIGINALS FUTUREPACER RELEASE INFORMATION
The bizarre new adidas Originals Futurepacer will make its global debut on June 9th, 2018.
