adidas adidas’ early-2000s Supernova running shoe is taking a trip to space and the far future, taking on two colorways inspired by the weathering they’d receive on another planet for the special-edition COS release.

adidas’ Supernova is a blast from the past, recreating the early aughts model in full detail, down to the adiPrene+ cushioning in the midsoles. The silhouette has seen a number of in-line releases over the past year as well as several collaborative efforts along the way. Now, the design team at the Three Stripes have reimagined the retro model in a futuristic context, inspired by the weathering the shoe would go through if used on another planet. Dubbed the COS Supernova, the first pair in ‘Halo Silver’ is inspired by Neptune, featuring a blue color that comes from the planet’s partly methane atmosphere that absorbs red light spectrums. CH4, the chemical formula for methane, is printed on the toes, while an ‘8th’ label on the tongues points to Neptune’s position in the solar system. Next up, the ‘Aluminum’ color takes its colors from Mars, and the iron oxide that makes up much of the planet’s surface and atmosphere. Once again, the chemical formula (Fe2O3) is found on the toes, while the ‘4th’ label indicates its place in the solar system.
