adidas’ archives are filled with hundreds of classic silhouettes, each with their own unique history. This month, the Originals team is set to revive another, bringing back the Americana from 1971.

When the adidas Americana first made its debut back in 1971, the world of sports were in a very different place. At the time, the Americana was designed specifically for the American Basketball Association (ABA), that would not merge with the NBA we know today until 1976. Constructed from an assortment of canvas, leather, and small hints of suede, the Americana dominated the ABA thanks to its sturdy support in the high-top version as well as plenty of grip and traction due to the underfoot cupsole. Even the Americana’s first colorway was an ode to the ABA, featuring red, white, and blue stripes to match the league’s colors. Now, almost 50 years after its debut, the Americana is back, and paying respects to its origins. For the first colorways, adidas has chosen to dress both the high and low top versions entirely in white, as well as removing the signature three stripes for a much simpler design. The shoe’s name is instead printed in place of the stripes, coming in a simple Helvetica-style font. The low-top Americana features a single band of red wrapping around the heel, while the high-top comes with a minute blue accent, reminiscent of the original ABA color scheme.
