adidas has iterated on their Climacool running shoe countless times since its launch in 2002. This Summer, the breathable technology is taking to the high seas with a new Boat shoe variant, coming soon.
Running footwear has been constantly in pursuit of shedding weight, conserving energy, and staying breathable for decades. Advancements in materials and construction arrive ever year, with technologies like Nike’s carbon FlyPlate to put more of the effort on the shoes instead of your legs. Back in 2002, adidas’ answer for breathability was Climacool. The shoe used a wide gauge mesh for the upper for maximum airflow around the user’s feet, combined with a unique midsole that featured holes under the shoe’s arch, allowing another channel for air to pass around the feet, reducing the buildup of heat and odors.
Climacool has stuck around in various forms over the past twenty-four years, adopted into new formats like Ultraboost runners and the recent 3D printed models. This Summer, adidas is sending the retro tech out to sea with a new Boat shoe format. The look pairs the original Climacool running shoe sole with a new boat shoe-inspired moccasin upper. The look is ready to set sail this season, with two colors lined up for launch; a mixed material suede and pebbled leather in black, and a classic Boat styling in Cardboard brown, constructed from nubuck.
