Reebok is up to something new this year, giving fans a chance to secure limited-edition sneakers ahead of their launch. Titled ‘First Pitch’ program, the new release method aims to fund special-release shoes even before they release, donating proceeds along the way.

The Reebok ‘First Pitch’ program was just announced last week, and already we have the first release coming up this weekend. First, a little bit about the program, which aims to change ‘sneaker drops’ and how fans can get their hands on the latest hot release. First Pitch works like this: Reebok designers come up with a shoe and create a ‘pitch’ for consumers, consisting of rendered images and a background story. Then, the shoe is launched on the Reebok website, with a limited number of pairs available (500 for the “Beekeeper” Classic dropping this week). As pairs are sold, the price continues to rise, and if they reach the minimum number to be made, the release will go into production and everyone who paid will get their pair, and some of the proceeds will be donated to a relevant charity. If not, the shoe will never get made. For the launch of the program, Reebok designers Alex Chou and Emily Gibbenmeyer cooked up a beekeeping-inspired take on the Classic Leather, featuring a suede upper with swirling honey coloring, a honeycomb-printed outsole, and a hand-drawn Save the Bees logo on the tongue.
