adidas Updates the Handball Spezial with a New GT Edition

adidas has placed a heavy emphasis on their Handball Spezial silhouette this year, giving the retro trainer the same push the Samba got in 2024. This season, a new GT edition of the model is starting to hit shelves in a smooth “Mauve” color scheme.

adidas’ retro trainer silhouettes have had a newfound wave of popularity over the last few years, with models like the Samba dominating the casual sneaker space, particularly outside of the sneakerhead community. This has caused the Three Stripes to branch out with some other classic models, like the Handball Spezial getting a big push over the last year. This season, the Handball is getting a new GT upgrade, with refreshed paneling for a striking new look.

The new Handball Spezial GT brings some elements of other classic adidas shoes to the silhouette, in what is speculated to be a skate shoe version of the classic model. The upper has been reconstructed, and now prominently features aggressive stripes panels from the Predator line, as well as an extended eyestay that wraps around the heel of the model. The GT will debut in the “Wonder Mauve” color scheme, which mixes light and dark shades of purple across a suede upper, adding black stripes and heels as well as a burnt orange inner lining.

Saucony’s retro running shoes have become some of the hottest collaborative releases on the market. This week, we got a first look at an upcoming project with London’d Footpatrol, coming Spring 2025.

The last few months of 2024 have been full of some pretty exciting projects from Saucony, the Boston-based performance running shoe brand. While Saucony has been a player in the collaborative game for years, their retro running products have found new popularity this year, and a number of partners have lined up to deliver their takes on these classics. The most popular models have been the ProGrid Triumph 4 and the ProGrid Omni 9, the latter of which will see a release with Footpatrol in 2025.

London retailer Footpatrol is jumping on the Saucony hype with a special release of the Omni 9, delivering yet another exciting colorway of the older running shoe. The model gets a bright blue base layer for the upper with some teal accents around the heels and light blue trimming the midsole. Dark brown overlays cover the rest of the shoe, with some grey accents to complete the look.

FOOTPATROL X SAUCONY PROGRID OMNI 9 RELEASE INFORMATION

The upcoming release from London retailer Footpatrol and Saucony releases on February 27th exclusively at Footpatrol’s London and Paris locations as well as online at Footpatrol.com. Featuring the ProGrid Omni 9 in a lush blue color scheme with brown accents, pairs will be available gloablly with a wider release in March 2025. The retail price is $170 USD.

The Nike Dunk High “Michigan” Returns in March 2025

Nike continues to supplement their new Dunk releases with some classic colorways. This week, word of a rerelease of their OG Dunk High style for “Michigan” has surfaced, along with the shoe’s official images.

Nike has spent a ton of time on the Dunk over the last few years, bringing hundreds of new colorways to life as well as rehashing some classic, with a healthy dose of collaborations to even things out. Recently they gave the Co.JP “What the Dunk” style a global release for the first time since its debut in 2007. In 2020, they rereleased the entire “Be True to Your School” collection from 1985, and now another pair from that pack is getting a 2025 rerelease.

Next year marks forty years of the Dunk, a flagship sneaker for Nike over the years. To celebrate the occasion, the Swoosh is rolling out another rerelease of the “Michigan” Dunk High, a special-edition pair that first released in 1985 for the “Be True to Your School” series. Released again in 2020, the pair returns again in 2025. The style code for this release has been changed since 2020, though there appear to be no differences in the overall design and coloring as of yet.

NIKE DUNK HIGH “MICHIGAN” RELEASE INFORMATION

Nike has yet to announced their rerelease of the iconic Dunk High in its “Michigan” color scheme yet, but it is expected to arrive sometime in Spring 2025. The navy blue and maize gold style will likely be available from both the SNKRS app and select retailers, for $135.

JoeFreshGoods is back with another New Balance project for Spring 2025. Returning to the silhouette that started his collaborations with the Boston brand, the 992, the “Aged Well” edition is coming soon.

Releases from Chicago creative JoeFreshGoods and New Balance have been absent from our release calendar for the last six months or so. The last project came in July 2024, and featured tonal red and blue styles of the 990v6. Joe is a busy guy, and this week we finally have a look at what’s next from one of the best collaborators in the sneaker world, returning to the 992 for the first time.

The debut collab from JFG and New Balance came in 2020, debuting his heart-themed 992 at the NBA’s All-Star Weekend. The shoes were extremely limited and are still tough to get a hold of to this day. The next release from JFG and NB features the 992 again, this time in an “Aged Well” theme. The look features muted neutral tones, mixing olive with tan and brown and a pale pink accent. The new style will come with four sets of laces in different colors to give some room for personal choice.

Despite all of the sneaker news coming out of NBA All-Star Weekend the last few days, we also got a nice chunk of new information about Nike .SWOOSH releases. Check out the new “Tomb Raider” inspired pair of the Air Max 1, coming this Fall.

Nike launched the .SWOOSH line in 2024, as a means of connecting the worlds of sneakers and video games. The first projects from the .SWOOSH label came in a digital form, formally working with prominent video games like NBA 2K and Fortnite to bring iconic sneakers as wearable in-game accessories. Late in 2024, they introduced the Air Max 1 Low-Poly, a new version of the classic runner designed to look like a retro low-polygon video game.

Over the past weekend, several new pairs of the Air Max 1 Poly surfaced online, giving us a look at a new direction for .SWOOSH physical releases. Both styles are seemingly inspired by classic video game characters from the ’90s, one inspired by Donkey Kong and the second taking cues from Lara Croft, the iconic Tomb Raider. This pair borrows colors from Lara’s classic outfit in the first few games, adding a muted green mudguard and Swoosh and a brown gum outsole. The pair, like its DK counterpart, likely features a handful of nods to the classic game, like the cheat code printed on the insoles that gave Lara access to all weapons in the OG game.

NIKE .SWOOSH AIR MAX 1 “TOMB RAIDER” RELEASE INFORMATION

The next release from Nike’s .SWOOSH label has been announced for release, starting on February 26th, 2025. Continuing their video game character-inspired styles, the “Tomb Raider” pair inspired by the original Lara Croft look will be available exclusively to .SWOOSh members for $150.

adidas has spent the last year hyping up their Handball Spezial model, a retro sports shoe from 1979. The model has seen some excellent releases since its return, and now is introducing an all-leather style with quilted details.

The adidas Handball originally launched in 1979, as a purpose-made sneaker for handball players. When it was first designed, the model featured an all-suede upper for enhanced mobility and flexibility, and became immensely popular in the United Kingdom in the ’80s and beyond. Now, the silhouette is back as a lifestyle model, with plenty of new colors and collaborations to go around.

This week, we got an early look at an interesting new look for the Handball Spezial, which ditches the classic suede upper in favor of a glossy black leather. The heel tabs and Three Stripes panels are added in plain white leather with matching laces, and the usual gum sole underfoot. The most interesting part of this release is the toe box, which adds some quilted stitching inspired by older soccer shoes.

Asics’ GEL-Kayano 14 in “Lime” Releases Summer 2025

Asics retro silhouettes are everywhere right now, with the Japanese brand taking over as the go-to source for ‘dad’ sneakers. The GEL-Kayano 14 is still on a hot streak after a big 2024, with new colorways like this “Lime” pair on the way for Summer 2025.

Asics’ GEL-Kayano 14 retro has been incredibly well received by the sneaker community in the last few years. When the model first released in 2008, it was heralded by runners for its performance value, thanks to its high-end GEL cushioning in the midsole. The fourteenth model in the series, it won a number of awards for running sneakers before being retired for later iterations.

In the last few years, the GK14 has returned, now under the brand’s SportStyle banner, repurposed as a lifestyle model. Plenty of the new colorways have retained the brand’s 2000s aesthetics, with mesh and synthetic construction and plenty of shimmering metallic silver panels. The latest style to surface is no different, dressing the majority of the shoe’s upper in a silver tone. White branding accents and laces break it up a bit, while Lime green hits on the heels and cushioning elements complete the look.

ASCIS GEL-KAYANO 14 “LIME” RELEASE INFORMATION

Asics’ latest colorway of their retro GEL-Kayano 14 has not been publicly given a release date yet, but are expected to arrive in Summer 2025. The new “Lime”-accented silver look will be available from the brand’s website along with a range of select retailers, with a price tag of $150.
