The New Balance 550 basketball sneaker is back, revived last year for the first time since 1989. Now, the Boston brand is gearing up to release over a dozen new color schemes, several of which are already available in Japan.

When New Balance and Aimé Leon Dore announced the release of their collaborative P550 last year, plenty of sneakerheads immediately turned to the internet to figure out just where the hell the shoe came from. No longer a part of New Balance’s offerings at the time, we quickly learned that the P550 originated in 1989, when the Boston brand maintained a large presence in the basketball world. Referred to as the ‘basketball oxford’ thanks to their performance on-court and their wearability off of it, Teddy Santis’ hand in bringing back the classic sneaker has made it a sought-after silhouette by both sneakerheads and fashion fans in the past year. Luckily, New Balance has plenty of fresh colorways lined up for the next couple of years, starting with some bright new looks that debuted overseas in Japan this month. First seen in our preview of the 550 for 2021, the three initial color schemes paint the silhouette in color pairings of green & yellow, red & blue, or navy & yellow, each bearing a striking resemblance to college and NBA team colors.
