Saucony’s retro silhouettes have quietly been making a comeback in the last two years, a surprise to no real fans of the brand. This week, the Massachusettes brand debuted a new project with Philadelphia’s Lapstone & Hammer, reviving the Courageous in new Moc form.
The story behing the first collaboration from Lapstone & Hammer and Saucony is all about their similar Philadelphia origins. Lapstone is born and bred in Philadelphia, while Saucony’s roots were planted about 75 miles North of the city, along the Saucony river. Taking the naming scheme even further, the name Saucony comes from the Native American Lenape word saconk, which translates to “where two rivers meet”, a perfect metaphor for the initial collaboration between two partners. The project is centered around the Saucony Courageous, a running shoe originally debuted in the mid ’80s and designed to give runners enough energy return to push them an extra mile or two. Since then, the Courageous has returned sparingly, with the first retro release only coming to fruition in 2008. Now, Saucony has handed Lapstone & Hammer the reins, allowing them to rebuild the Courageous into a new “Moc” version, complete with whip-stitched toeboxes. The Lapstone x Saucony Couragemous Moc will release in two colorways, each constructed from a selection of luxurious Horween leather and various types of suede. The first color scheme paints the shoe mostly in white, adding dark brown accents to the heel as well as tiny red and blue accents. The second colorway comes in black, with lighter btan leather added to the heels and inner lining, while small purple accents complete the look.

The first collaboration between Philadelphia’a Lapstone & Hammer and Saucony is scheduled to debut later this week, on March 28th, 2020, exclusively from Lapstone and Saucony stores. Then, a week later on April 4th, the “Black Sand” colorway of the Courageous Moc will see a wider release from Saucony retailers. Both Moc pairs will go for a cool $150, while the rest of the capsule collection ranges from $50 to $150.
