The adidas Superstar first released in 1969 as the world's first all-leather basketball shoe. Originally designed for professional basketball players, the Superstar featured:

The Superstar's cultural significance was cemented in 1986 when Queens, NY hip-hop group Run-DMC released the single "My Adidas." The song celebrated their daily attachment to the shell-toe Superstar (worn laceless, a DMC trademark). adidas subsequently offered Run-DMC a $1 million endorsement deal — the first ever non-athlete athletic brand endorsement — permanently linking the Superstar to hip-hop culture.
