adidas’ relationship with Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto grows stronger with each year, as the two continue to push each other’s design limits. This week, that comes in the form of their Y-3 Runner 4D, the latest footwear from adidas and Yamamoto.

Y-3 and adidas have been partners for quite some time now as Yohji Yamamoto adds his luxurious aesthetics to the athletic brands’ sneakers. When 4D was first introduced it was a no brainer that Yohji Yamamoto would use the futuristic carbon midsole for their collaborations, and that is exactly what they did as they quickly implemented the new technology into their silhouettes. That was back in 2018, when adidas Y-3 debuted their first iteration of the 4D Runner, a series which continues into 2020, now onto its third iteration. Still titled the Y-3 Runner 4D, the latest version makes some major changes to the upper of the shoe. Instead of a standard knit upper, the new version appears to be constructed gfrom a high-grade mesh base layer, reinforced by minimal paneling made from suede. In fact, most of the layering on this shoe comes from embroidery, which is added from heel to toe to give the latest Y-3 4D shoe hints of color and plenty of texture.
