The 1982 classic American film “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” is still extremely visible in pop culture today, with a special pair of footwear to thank for it. This year, Vans is celebrating the movie with a special release of the Slip-On, famously worn by Jeff Spicoli.

The Vans Slip-On was already a well-established sneaker when it appears in Fast Times in 1982, beloved by the skaters and BMX riders that it was originally built for. But when the movie released, things changed in a massive way, dragging vans into the spolight of pop culture and the forefront of what would quickly become the “cool” aesthetic. Worn by Sean Penn’s character Jeff Spicoli in the movie, the character lent a happy-go-lucky stoner/surfer feel that the Slip-On quickly became associated with. When the movie released in 1982, Vans handed out pairs of the Fast Times-branded checkerboard shoes to attendees at the event, before locking them back in the vault, until now.
