Louisiana-based streetwear store Sneaker Politics is celebrating Memorial Day this year, teaming up with Asics for a limited-edition release of the GEL-Lyte III, dropping later this month.

The sneaker world celebrates plenty of holidays, with themed releases around Christmas, Thanksgiving, Valentine’s Day, even the commercially-motivated Air Max Day. However, it’s somewhat rare to see a release celebrating one of the many military holidays in the United States. Enter Derek Curry, founder of the Louisiana-based Sneaker Politics. This week, a new collaboration between Politics and Asics surfaced online, featuring the GEL-Lyte III in a military-inspired look. The release is rumored to be inspired by Curry’s own military service, and will debut this month on Memorial Day, a federal holiday for mourning soldiers fallen in battle. For this release, the GLIII comes in a forest green suede, likely inspired by United States military fatigues. The toe boxes feature torn areas which have been patched with the stars and stripes from the country’s flag. Military uniform-inspired patches are seen on the lateral sides of each heel, and there appears to be a date embroidered on the medial toes, though only the year ‘2006’ can be seen in the current photos.
