New Balance’s Tokyo Design Studio has created some wild new silhouettes since its inception in 2018, like the three-in-one Niobium Concept 1 from last year. This week, the adapting sneaker released in a new “Steel Grey” color scheme, available now.

The New Balance Niobium Concept 1 first popped up on our radar early in August 2020, when the running brand teamed up with Japan’s Snow Peak for a fishing-inspired collection that included the new silhouette. Designed by New Balance’s team at the Tokyo Design Studio, the advanced concept silhouette was built to accommodate three silhouettes in one, a trail hiking shoe, an outdoor slipper, and an indoor slipper that comes in the form of the shoe’s inner booty. Interchangeable via a zipper around the middle of the collar, the Niobium Concept provides coverage for any needs. This week, the TDS Niobium Concept 1 returned in a new “Steel Grey” color scheme, following up on the first standard-issue releases in September. The first release of 2021 sees the convertible silhouette blanketed from heel to toe in a solid grey color scheme, mixing light and dark tones for more texture across the upper.
