New Balance’s classic 997 has taken a bit of a backseat this year as the brand focuses on other new models, though that has not altered its status as an all-time great. This week, the 997 returns in a colorful new look, courtesy of STAUD.

Despite New Balance’s focus on new silhouettes like the 327 and the revival of some classics, the 997 remains a staple among fans of the brand. First released in 1990, the straightforward runner has evolved numerous times in the past 30 years, though the original remains our favorite. This week, Los Angeles-based womenswear brand STAUD unveiled their take on the retro runner, which takes after their eclectic clothing through a rainbow of colorful panels. Based around a white leather upper, this special-edition release adds suede overlays in orange, yellow, blue, green, and soft pink to the 997s layered upper, assembled in one of the brand’s U.S. factories, finishing it off with the essential MADE branding.
