New Balance’s older running models are often the center of attention for the brand, but their simple lifestyle trainers are starting to stack up well against the classic. This season, the 950 joins the Boston brand’s catalog for Summer.
New Balance sneakers are often defined by a number. The original system defined how ‘premium’ the sneaker was, like the 574 being on the lower end of materials and construction, and the 990 family being the top-tier offering. Over the years the tiered numbering system has fallen by the wayside, and is now used to designate product families rather than project an idea of what ‘level’ of sneaker you are buying. An excellent example of this is the new 950, a model launching this Summer after debuting back in April on the feet of Cooper Flagg.
The 950 designation is not an entirely new entry from New Balance. 950 was formerly used for a trainer made exclusively for the US military, designed purely as a functional piece of footwear that holds no lasting cultural significance. The Boston brand has repurposed the number for their new lifestyle shoe, a simple, slim model with some resemblance to the T500. The 950 features a thick rubber midsole at the bottom with no extra flare or embellishment, acting as a base for the more intricate upper. The top half mixes leather layers with a suede toe box, all of which come in shades of white or beige for this initial release. The N logos are cutout from the base layer and applied in suede, creating the usual outline of their branding from negative space, a unique twist on a New Balance design element. The heel counters also use dual-layering for both structure and opportunity for color blocking, while a set of thick cotton laces complete the look.

The upcoming lifestyle silhouette from New Balance, the 950, has not been officially announced yet, but is expected to land on shelves soon on July 1st, 2026. The new silhouette is something of an expansion on the T500 trainer, adding new layers for a bulkier overall shape, and allowing for more depth in color blocking. The model will debut in this simple off-white and beige look, priced at just $120.
