New Balance’s trail sneakers are everywhere right now, from the more popular 801 to the modernized 850AT, and now, the 703. Boasting a heavily layered and durable upper, the 703 quietly released in Japan this week, with a global drop of five colorways in the coming weeks.

New Balance’s running archives are bursting with hundreds of sneakers from over the years, with just about every shape and size you could imagine available. In recent years, the Boston-based brand has been using these archives to revive interesting or fan-favorite sneakers from years past, like the 801, a chunky trail runner with plenty of personality. The 801 was a hit in 2019, worn by most as a casual sneaker, and now, New Balance is reaching into their library once more, to revive the 703. This shoe follows the same premise: oversized, an absurd amount of layers, and extremely durable for trail running. The 703 features a somewhat sleeker overall build, with a much more heavily layered upper, constructed from a mix of mesh, suede, and ballistic nylon overlays on the outermost parts of the shoe. The 703 has already been made available in Japan in a total of five colorways, all of which are expected to arrive stateside sometime in the coming weeks.
