New Balance’s archives have brought us some serious heat in the last few years. From retro 860s to the return of the 992, the Boston brand is on top of their game right now, making this week’s unveiling of the retro 2002R silhouette that much more interesting.

New Balance’s latest iterations of the 2002 silhouette are not the first we’ve seen this year, though they do give us a few more pieces of the puzzle that make up the revival of this early 2000s silhouette. The other pair we’re referring to is, obviously, Salehe Bembury’s Grand Canyon-inspired pair, a special-edition release that has been teased by Bembury and friends numerous times in recent weeks. As we now know, the two new colorways we’re looking at today are New Balance’s first step in a retro release plan that includes a number of collaborative projects, including Salehe Bembury, INVINCIBLE, thisisneverthat, Randomevent, and more. The initial release will feature the NB 2002R in your choice of black or grey color scheme, constructed from top-of-the-line nubuck and suede, 3M reflective underlays, and a mesh base.
