New Balance’s 1906 model has been a constant piece of their catalog since its return in 2022, and domination of the collab circuit. This season, the model is getting a new utilitarian upgrade, with a near-seamless taped upper and toggle lacing.
The 1906R has been dominant in New Balance’s releases over the last three years. The model originally released in 2009, and was named after the year that the brand was founded, in addition to being a part of the 1000 series of running shoes. In the few years since its return, we’ve seen plenty of iterations of the former performance model, including R, D, M, and U subtitles that each denote a specific purpose and use different materials.
This week, the 1906R style returns with a whole new style, which looks to be more at home under the Utility banner. The new pairs come with a soft knitted mesh upper, and use taped overlays instead of sewn textiles, reducing their total weight and profile to be more of a sock-like snug fit. Even the tongues have been slimmed down to a single layer of synthetic textile for a tech-wear inspired look. The lacing system has been replaced by toggle lacing for eacy adjustment, with pull tabs added at the heel. Two colorways are coming soon, one in grey and white, and the second in black and navy blue.
