New Balance’s first collaboration featuring the retro 2002r is almost here. While the chances for Salehe’s orange pair are feeling pretty slim, there is another shot at the vintage runner this month thanks to N. HOOLYWOOD and Invincible, coming soon.

Earlier this month, New Balance announced that their classic 2002 was back, and they would be kicking off the retro release with a series of special collaborations. Now, with the first from Salehe Bembury ready to release, we have an early look at the next special-edition release designed in partnership by Japan’s N. HOOLYWOOD and Korea’s Invincible. With two collaborators working with New Balance this time around, we weren’t sure what to expect, and the storytelling for this release definitely caught us by surprise. Instead of dreaming up something from scratch. HOOLYWOOD and Invincible decided to combine their respective past New Balance collaborations into one, borrowing materials and various bits and pieces from each for a brand new look for the 2002R. The new look begins with a mesh base layer borrowed from N. HOOLYWOOD’s 996 from last year, while shaggy suede overlays are borrowed from Invincible’s 2018 pair of the 574. The hybrid look is tied together by a uniform grey color scheme, which extends down onto the silhouette’s borrowed 860v2 tooling.
