Korean outdoor apparel brand CAYL debuted their first collaboration with New Balance last Fall. Now, the two are reuniting for another collection in 2024, this time reworking the popular 1906 with a new semi-transparent mesh upper with taped overlays, launching later in 2024.
Climb as You Love, or CAYL, is a relatively new Korean brand, founded in 2011 and born out of love for the outdoors. The lifestyle brand is geared towards climbing, hiking, and a passion for the outdoors, expressed through expertly crafted apparel. Last year, the brand debuted a collaboration with New Balance, featuring their retro 610 trail runner alongside one of the premier running shoes, and a wide collection of apparel. Now, the new partners are back, gearing up to release a fresh range of sneakers and apparel, with the 1906R taking its turn as the flagship silhouette in the project.
New Balance’s 1906R has seen a lot of special colors and styles over the last few years. The runner originally launched back in 2009, fading into obscurity before NB times its return to coincide with the trend of retro runners and the chunky ‘dad’ shoe aesthetic. CAYL’s take on the silhouette is wildly different from past releases, deconstructing the upper and rebuilding it entirely with a new look. The look is constructed from a single piece of semi-translucent GridStop mesh, an ultralight fabric that plays well on a shoe for the outdoors. The shoe’s signature overlays have been reduced to a heat tape overlay, adhered to the body without stitching. Tongues are added in a lined version of GridStop, while a toggle lacing system completes the look.

The next collection from Korean outdoor brand CAYL and New Balance has been announced to release this week, on August 23rd, 2024. Featuring the 1906R with a reworked mesh upper and heat-taped overlays, pairs will be available via the NB website with a price tag of $170.
