Bodega and New Balance collaborations have been some of the hottest releases in recent years, and that trend appears to continue in 2020. This week, the Boston-based retailer unveiled its latest project with the footwear giant, an all-terrain take on the X-Racer.

New Balance’s X-Racer sportstyle silhouette has kept a relatively low profile since its debut release last year. Inspired by a handful of the brand’s running shoes from the mid-’90s to early 2000s, the X-Racer presents a sleek, modernized take on New Balance’s design style. However, it has received almost no special attention from the brand, until now. This week, fan-favorite partner of New Balance and renowned retailer Bodega took to social media to share their take on the X-Racer, spinning the hybrid lifestyle/sportswear sneaker into an outdoor-ready beast. Featuring a new construction of ripstop, suede, and ballistic nylon, this special-edition version rebuilds much of the silhouette with rugged new details.

First, the typical ‘N’ logo has been stripped away and replaced with nylon webbing strips, along with one of the supporting overlays along the forefoot. The collar now features a leather lacing loop that appears to be unattached to the rest of the shoe. The toe box overlays have been reworked drastically, swapping the smooth curve for jagged corners and aggressive lines in suede and ballistic. The tongue’s shape remains unchanged but appears to be slimmed down for better wearability. Additionally, Bodega has added its own custom webbing loop down the center of the tongue, which uses metal snaps to provide a few options for lacing the shoes.
