Asics’ Skyhand OG Returns in Bright New Colorways

Retro trainer silhouettes have taken over the sneaker world recently, particularly for the fashion-minded consumer. This week, Asics has released their latest entry in that field, reviving the ’90s Skyhand OG handball shoe, and dressing it in “Cilantro” and “Midnight Plum” colorways.

Slim trainers have been a part of sports footwear for years, as brand have always strived to provide athletes with the most lightweight and unintrusive sneakers possible. In recent years, these styles have become the pinnacle of fashion-minded wearers, with styles like adidas’ Samba and Handball taking over their release calendars. Now, Asics has dropped their contribution, the Skyhand OG.

Asics had been riding high on the “Y2K” trend for the last few years, using their archival, turn-of-the-century silhouettes to breathe some new life into their SportStyle category. Now, they are leaning into another popular trend of the moment, retro trainers. This week the brand has released new styles of the Skyhand OG, a trainer released in 1993 as a handball sneaker. The shoe is a cousin of the adidas Samba, featuring a slim profile and thin soles for maximum ground traction. The shoe has launched in two initial colors, one in “Midnight Plum” purple with orange, and a “Cilantro” green style with grapefruit pink.
