Asics’ GEL-Kayano lineup first got its start in 1993 with the GEL-Kayano Trainer. Now on its 27th iteration and year, the Japanese brand is dipping back into some older models, releasing the first retro pairs of the GEL-Kayano 14 later this month.

Asics GEL technology first emerged in the 1990s, providing a soft and durable cushioning for the Japanese brand’s running shoes. GEL quickly became one of Asics’s most popular offerings, evolving into many different forms and versions, like 1993’s GEL-Kayano Trainer. Introduced for all-around exercise and running, the Kayano Trainer was a hit among athletes, inspiring nearly three generations of footwear since. Tucked among those years are some incredible pieces of both Asics and sneaker history, and this year, the brand has revived one such model, the GEL-Kayano 14, for its first-ever retro release. Kicked off with a Kiko Kostadinov-led version earlier this month, the Kayano 14 returns once again later this week in four in-line colorways that deck out the silhouette in grey and silver tones, with accents in gold, red, and blue.
