Comme des Garçon’s projects with New Balance are few and far between, but almost always herald something special for the coming year. This week, we have an early look at their 1226 revival, coming in 2027.
New Balance has been minting hit sneakers every year since 2021, reaching into their not-so-distant past for their retro releases of techy runners. The series of releases, now going on six years, started with the 2002R, a shoe that grew immensely popular overnight on the heels of the “Protection” pack. They’ve followed up with more early-2000s-era runners like the 1906, 204, and 1000, with each year bringing us both a new lifestyle model or one of these retros, repurposed for casual wear. This week, we have an early look at the future, a retro of the 1226.
The New Balance 1226 originally released in 2011, built for distance running like many of its cousins that have reappeared this decade. The model follows the same design principle: mesh underlay, synthetic paneling, and plenty of Abzorb cushioning in the heel. The 1226 has some unique elements to it, like the midfoot structural paneling wrapping all the way around the heel to the other sidewall to form one gigantic piece, and asymmetric toe paneling to provide extra support around your piggies. Comme des Garçon will be one of the first to collaborate on the model, issuing their pair in a mix of washed black suede, brown mesh underlays, and faint purple N logos.
CDG HOMME X NEW BALANCE 1226 RELEASE INFORMATION
The latest project from Comme des Garçon’s Homme division and New Balance was teased today, but is not expected to release until the Spring/Summer 2027 season. This collaboration will revive a 2011 tech runner, the 1226, for the first time since its debut fifteen years ago. The CdG edition comes in a mix of black, brown, and purple tones for a clean stealthy look, and will likely be available in limited supply from CdG retailers like Dover Street Market.
