Studio Hagel & Asics Unveil Their Next Innovation in Circular Design; the Neotide

Studio Hagel and Asics are no stranger to recycled sneakers; their debut release in 2024 utilized plenty of reused materials. This week, they’ve unveiled the next wave of circular footwear design, the Neotide silhouette, arriving exclusively in the EU this week.

Studio Hagel got its start in Amsterdam in 2015, founded by Mathieu Hagelaars. The studio began as a footwear experiment, pushing back on conventional ideas of shoe design by making wearable pairs from excess or scrap materials, merging contrasting styles, and turning household objects into wearable sneakers. Their approach to footwear treats it like a system of interchangeable components, rather than a solid, singular object. Over the years, Hagel has attracted the attention of some huge brands, providing conceptual styles and ideas to the likes of Off-White, Moncler, Puma, and Asics, with whom they’ve partnered with to create new silhouettes from recycled materials.

In 2024, Hagel launched their first official partnership with Asics, the Neocurve sneaker. The model embraced circular design, constructing the shoes from excess materials and recycled parts for a brand new silhouette. This week, the two have announced their next iteration of circular design in footwear; the Neotide. This new silhouette delves even deeper into reusing materials, with parts and shoes gathered from used and unsold sneakers across the EU. Those shoes were then given to Fastfeet Grinded, a Netherlands-based recycling company, to break down the materials and prepare them for reuse. Then, Hagel assembled the new Neotide through their own production channels.

The Neotide model looks similar to many Asics Sportstyle models we’ve seen in recent years, but makes some important additions in terms of recycled parts. The upper features a knit base layer made from 100% recycled materials, while the laces come in at 75% reused. This is layered suede and nubuck panels in a design inspired by the GEL-NYC. The midsole, a new bulbous tooling, contains 25% recycled rubber in the cushioning foam, and the same amount of recycled rubber in the tougher outsoles. Inside, the shoe packs Asics’ signature GEL cushioning, which is made from 100% in-house GEL technology processing waste. The Neotide will come in two colorways, a dark “Brown Storm” edition, and a lighter “Sweet Pink” style.
