Nike’s retro Waffle Trainer 2 has launched in a number of fresh colorways so far this year, with plenty more on the way for the rest of 2021. This week, we have a closer look at a special-edition “Three Bears” pair, coming soon.

Nike’s Waffle Trainer is one of the brand’s oldest sneakers. Dreamt up by Bill Bowerman himself when he was still the Oregon track coach, the Waffle shoe was intended to give runners better grip on the track and more control over their running. The first samples were made exactly how the name implies- by pouring rubber directly into his wife’s waffle maker to create outsoles. Since then, the Waffle series has remained an essential part of the Nike story, releasing in new styles and colorways to this day, like this limited-edition “Three Bears” colorway coming this Summer. Featuring an upper constructed from yellow nylon and tye-dye suede overlays, this pair also adds “Three Bears” graphics to the shoe’s insoles, though it is currently unclear what the story behind them is. The heels also add what appears to be Japanese kanji lettering and two sets of googly eyes, one on each shoe.
