The vintage Nike Waffle Trainer 2 made a grand return this year, arriving in retro form after a several-year hiatus. Luckily, Nike is not shying away from the vintage silhouette this time, presenting new colorways like this “Moon Fossil” look all year long.

Nike’s Waffle Trainer is one of the brand’s oldest sneakers. Dreamt up by Bill Bowerman himself when he was still the Oregon track coach, the Waffle shoe was intended to give runners better grip on the track and more control over their running. The first samples were made exactly how the name implies- by pouring rubber directly into his wife’s waffle maker to create outsoles. While the initial tests left something to be desired, finally Bowerman struck gold, creating the Nike Waffle Trainer in the process. This year, Nike has been celebrating the invention with a run of the vintage Waffle Trainer 2, launching new colorways on a monthly basis. This week, the Swoosh released a fresh “Moon Fossil” color scheme, casting the sleek trainer in a tonal brown look with vibrant orange Swooshes to round out the look.
