Nike’s push towards circular manufacturing has taken another huge leap forward this season, with the unveiling of the ISPA Link sneakers this week. Built to be disassembled, the Link & Link Axis are coming soon.
Nike ISPA (Improvise, scavenge, protect, adapt) division has been leading the brand’s technological advancements for the past few years. This week, Nike unveiled the latest work from the advanced design team, which aims to bring Nike’s first fully recyclable, circular sneaker model to shelves. Known as the ISPA Link, the new silhouette comes in two forms, the standard-issue Link with a cut-and-sew upper, and the Link Axis, constructed with a 100% recycled Flyknit upper engineered specifically for the new model. Both shoes feature uppers that are easily removed from the recycled midsole unit, using a peg system, to help lock the shoe in place without the use of glues and reducing the amount of heating, cooling, and other high-energy processes used in the construction. Finally, the laces are the third piece of the puzzle, helping tie the shoes together, quite literally in the case of the Link Axis which utilizes a cage system to add more structure to the silhouette.
