Nike’s Free family is expanding this season, with the addition of a new outdoor-ready adaptation of the popular running technology. Check out the new Free Run Trail 5.0 in Grey/Volt, coming this Spring.

The roots of Nike’s Free technology were originally planted in the early 2000s, as the brand’s sports science team was researching the natural movement of the foot on various surfaces. They quickly discovered that an athlete’s two feet were far more flexible and adaptive than any shoe that had been created for them, and the good folks at Nike set about on adapting this research into their footwear. The result was a new style of the midsole, featuring deep, jagged cuts in all directions to allow the various portions to separate and move autonomously, reacting as the foot needed them. Since then, Nike designers have been constantly iterating, trying new cuts and ways to create a more adaptive midsole. This season, the Swoosh has unveiled a new addition to the Free family in the form of the Free Run Trail 5.0, a new silhouette better suited to rough terrain. The Trail 5.0 features a mesh bootie-like upper, protected by a synthetic leather covering, perforated for better airflow. The Free technology underfoot has changed as well, highlighting a large S-shaped slice through the rubber to allow for more natural motion of the foot, and adding new Nike tech like recycled Crater Foam to bring the shoe into the new decade.
