The Flyknit Trainer is a legendary silhouette in Nike’s archives. One of the most exciting colorways was the extremely limited “University Red” colorway, which has now been confirmed for a release sometime this Summer.
Nike’s Flyknit Trainer has a long and storied history in the world of sneakers. Released in 2012, the trainer was the legendary first appearance of Nike’s then-new Flyknit technology. The advancement in knit uppers allowed the company to apply a flexible, sock-like material to almost any shoe in their archives, updating it with an entirely new feel. Since it’s debut at the 2012 London Summer Games, the Flyknit Trainer has become a piece of Nike’s lore. Flyknit has grown to such massive popularity through the years that even non-sneakerheads know exactly what the material is. Additionally, the trainer was the canvas for many great colorways, some of which are finally seeing a return this year.
The first OG Flyknit Trainer colorway to come from Nike in 2018 will be the famed “University Red” rendition. The eye-grabbing colorway first appeared as part of the shoe’s original color run, though this special edition hue was produced in extremely limited numbers. The red Flyknit Trainer from 2012 was made in a very small run of only 400 pairs of the shoe. Each of the 400 was given to United States Olympic Athletes for them to be worn casually around the games, showcasing the Swoosh’s latest upper technology. The colorway is fairly simple, featuring an all-red Flyknit upper mixed with a healthy amount of black to balance it out. The Swooshes, tongue, and inner lining all come in black as well, while the sole is finished off in plain white.
