Nike’s Air Max archives are filled with some truly unexpected sneakers, as well as some true classics. This month, the Swoosh is rehashing one of its craziest, 1999’s Air Tuned Max.

The Nike Air Tuned Max made its debut at the height of Nike’s over-the-top design era, just before the brand has a bit of a reset in the early 2000s, returning them to a more distinct, and minimal version of Nike. However, the Air Tuned Max stood out not only among runner due to its comfort and stability, but the burgeoning sneakerhead scene was transfixed by the wild new look for the Tuned Max, propelling it into footwear legend as one of the wildest-looking Air Max shoes Nike ever produced. Constructed from a mixed bag of mesh, metallic-coated overlays, and plastic cages, the Air Tuned Max is an unruly assortment of its parts, featuring long, swooping curves and plenty of tight ones for a geometric feel. The first colorway of the Tuned Max to surface is the original, which decks out the classic turn-of-the-century runner in a black mesh base, with dark orange overlays and a celery green finish.
