The Nike Air Tech Challenge 2 might be one of the brand’s mostr important tennis shoes. Originally built for Andre Agassi, the unique silhouette was widely adopted by Nike fans, and returns this year in a new “Black Lava” color scheme.
When the Air Tech Challenge 2 first hit retail stores back in 1989, Nike fans went crazy over the new shoe. Deigned by the NikeCourt team specifically for tennis legend Andre Agassi to wear on court, the Air Tech Challenge challenged the norms of tennis footwear, thanks to its high cut and multi-layered construction, making it akin to basketball shoes that Nike was producing at the time. The Air Tech 2 quikcly became a fan-favorite silhouette off the court, thanks to its supportive leather uppers and aggressive styling. This month, the classic Nike model surfaced in an interesting new color scheme, one that flips the beloved “Hot Lava” look of the original into a new “Black Lava” style. The changes are simple: the leather of the upper is swapped from the original white to black, while the TPU overlays come in plain grey or white. The Swoosh and other Nike branding come in the famous “Lava” tone.

Nike’s flip of the classic Air Tech Challenge 2 color scheme to create the new “Black Lava” look launched earlier this week overseas, from Nike UK. The reverse look is not yet available in the United States, though they are expected to launch sometime here in the coming weeks. If you do have friends in the UK however, pairs will run you roughly $140 before tax and shipping.
