Originally debuted in 1884 by Michael Jordan for the Chicago Bulls rookie training camp and quickly banned from the NBA, the legendary Nike Air Ship will finally release to the public for the first time ever.

If you didn’t know about the Nike Air Ship, it’s time for a quick history lesson. Set to release in 1984, Nike created the Air Ship and was set to launch the full campaign with Michael Jordan but was quickly shut down by the NBA for violating the league’s uniform policy. The banned sneaker resulted in MJ being fined $5,000 each time he laced up the pair of kicks. The following year MJ went back to the drawing board with Nike and thus the Air Jordan 1 was born in all of its glory which featured the “Banned” colorway in ’85. The history line makes you think, would Jordan brand be the powerhouse of basketball sneakers if it wasn’t for the banned Air Ship? Who knows, but it’s definitely something interesting to think about.

Ever since 1984, the Nike Air Ship has been quite and in the vault, that is until now. A design that never came to the surface but created a tidal wave of yearly releases from Jordan and some of the best designers in the sneaker community for over the past 36 years will finally see a release to the general public. Dressed in the “Banned” colorway that features the classic red and black color scheme, this pair arrives in the iconic black leather upper that’s accented with red overlays on the eyestays, Nike Swoosh, and ankles. The only difference that the sneaker showcases is the updated midsole which features Nike’s new React technology. Something that’s brewed for almost four decades under the surface is finally set to drop resulting in many sneakerheads dubbing these a must cop.
