The Nike Air Max 90 has been a staple of the Swoosh’s lineup since its anniversary celebration last year, and the brand has no shortage of special-edition releases for 2021. This week, we have an early look at an Onigiri-themed colorway, dropping next month.

Nike’s Air Max series has always been held in high regard throughout certain Asian countries since the technology was originally introduced in the 1980s. In Japan, the Air Max 90 is the quintessential American running shoe and has held a special place in the hearts’ of the country’s sneakerheads for decades. This week, Nike has quietly unveiled a new limited-edition release of the Air Max 90 themed after the Japanese snack onigiri, or rice balls. This special pair features a faded denim-like print across the main layers of the upper, with clear plastic attachments for the lacing system and shank overlays. A rice grain print can be seen from underneath some of the clear sections, while a vibrant electric blue adds color to the Swoosh, tongue branding, and outsole. Finally, tiny red Air Max branding and a rice-printed insole complete the look.
